What happened to Demerara Cane Sugar?
It’s still right here! The product remains the same, we’ve simply changed the name to Domino® Turbinado Sugar.
Why did you change from Demerara Cane Sugar to Turbinado?
While the Demerara name is still also correct, more people refer to this sugar as “Turbinado,” so we read the room and went with the flow. It’s the exact same product you love, only with a new name for the new age.
What is Turbinado Sugar?
Domino® Turbinado Sugar is cane sugar that we craft to retain a bit of the molasses color and toffee-like flavor from the sugarcane itself. Its crystals are slightly larger than typical Granulated Sugar, have a translucent quality and offer a crunchy consistency that’s perfect for rimming cocktail glasses, sprinkling atop baked goods or sweetening fresh fruit. You can also prepare simple syrups with turbinado sugar for an extra layer of flavor. Use with lattes or to pour over pancakes.
Is Turbinado Sugar the same as Brown Sugar?
Turbinado Sugar is a type of Brown Sugar, but not the same as what you’re probably used to. Since it is crafted differently, Turbinado contains less moisture and features larger crystals than typical Brown Sugar. These qualities make it better for use in beverages, as a garnish or as a substitute for typical granulated sugar in your favorite recipes. For baked goods like gingerbread or chewy cookies, stick with our light or dark brown sugars.
Does Turbinado Sugar harden?
Like any sugar, Turbinado can clump and harden if exposed to moisture. To keep it as fresh as when it left the field, store it in an airtight container away from sources of moisture.
Can I substitute Turbinado Sugar for regular Granulated Sugar in recipes?
Turbinado can be substituted cup-for-cup when a recipe calls for Granulated Sugar. You’ll enjoy a delicious hint of molasses flavor, though baking results may vary because it does not dissolve fully in batters or doughs.
Can I substitute Turbinado Sugar for Brown Sugar in recipes?
Sure, but your recipe might need to be modified slightly. Since Brown Sugar contains more moisture, has smaller granulation and boasts a richer molasses flavor than Turbinado does, you’ll want to add a touch of molasses and perhaps a bit of milk or water, depending on the recipe. Baking results may also vary slightly due to the larger granulation.
Is Turbinado suitable for vegans?
Yes. Domino® Turbinado Sugar is made without using natural charcoal as a filter and is vegan.
